Sophisticated Sales Strategies with Helen Thacker

Sales

Sorry to break it to you, but you’re in sales, my friend.

I’m going to kick things off with a punchy quote I heard from the incredible Alex Hormozi:

"If you want to get more people to buy more of what you do, learn how to sell."

So true. But, I knowwww… Even when we understand we have to make sales if we want to put dollars in our bank account, it can still make us feel itch with discomfort, sick to our stomachs or downright embarrassed. Ever felt like that?

I promise, it doesn’t and shouldn't have to be like this. There’s a way to create a wildly successful business where your sales process both flows and has simple systems for scaling, where you’re not feeling the pressure to “persuade” people to buy. (Clue: arm-twisting is a fast path to failure!)

Because I know you’re the kind of female entrepreneur who’s not just about making money, but you’re also driven. You want to make an impact, right? And you deserve for the world to see your expertise. And selling is all part of that.

So are you ready to get sophisticated?

The Six-Figure U-Turn on My Business

I’d love to quickly share my own huge lesson, if that’s ok? Oh boy, did I learn that gentle sales are the ONLY way to success!

Backstory: I’ve been a solo entrepreneur for 19 years and have been selling in some way all along - from my first six-figure business in financial recruitment, through wedding cakes (while I had my two tiny boys running around… Lego and powdered sugar are a fun combo!) to the last four and a half years helping online business owners.

I had a 4-year full-time stint in network marketing. Something I knew I’d be good at and being the coachable and ambitious girl I am, went ALL in on the cold messaging and aggressive “let’s desperately sell to anyone with a pulse” methods I was told would work in the team I was in. I don’t know what came over me, if I’m honest, because I’d been consistently creating six-figure businesses from scratch for 15 years, doing things the way I knew worked: With sophistication!

Maybe it was eagerness, excitement with what was promised (or even brainwashing, dare I say it!) but I worked my butt off doing what I was shown. But my business was stalling. And I hated it. So after 2 years, I had a gut feeling that success was still absolutely possible but I needed to stop the scammy Pammy forceful selling. So, I made the huge decision to go out and do things my way.  I quit, moved to a new company and built a global six-figure team from scratch. With no mentor, just my years and years of learning how to sell in a way that felt good. And that worked.

No More Sales “Ick” Starts Here

Here’s what I’ve learned, and you can take these away and apply them today to help you gently sell more in your business:

  1. Learn how to talk to people in the DMs in a way that’s authentically you. I always say, “Speak to someone as genuinely as if you'd got chatting waiting in line for your Starbucks.”
  2. DM scripts are helpful for an initial message, but always personalise it. Then have a plan of where you’re taking them in the conversation, rather than a script, because the personalisation is the sophisticated and more successful way to sell.
  3. With that in mind, make sure your sales funnel (ie, process for taking someone from when they first discover you to when they’re all-in, excited buyers) is like a well-oiled machine. So you know where you’re leading them to. This helps you to have structure/efficiency, scalability and helps you constantly focus on exactly who your ideal client is.
  4. Make sure your messaging is on-point across the board and is clearly communicating exactly how you help, what makes you stand out, and you’re using techniques that mean you’re speaking about what your audience wants to hear.
  5. On calls and in sales conversations, LISTEN! This is your secret weapon for understanding your ideal clients. Responding after listening
  6. Remember that persuasion is bad for business… yours and theirs! Find the clarity and belief in what you do then you’ll be showing up (in your messaging and in conversations) with an energy that creates empowered buyers. If you have to persuade, let them go because they won’t get results and therefore neither do you!
  7. Sophisticated selling is about building trust, which takes time. Learn how to create content around what your community needs from you and how to showcase your expertise in a way that means you stand out in the crowd.  Then give value based around this. And trust will happen.
  8. Sophisticated selling is about being generous with your others in your space. I’m a huge advocate for collaboration as part of your audience growing strategy but it also lifts the coaching industry. Giving not just to your own community, but in others too, will turn you into an incredibly sophisticated “seller” of your offers.

I’m so happy the era of bro-selling is coming to an end. Let’s take this gentle style of sales into the more feminine entrepreneurial space. (Feminine meaning powerful and thoughtful, thank you very much!)  And I can’t wait to see your business flourish when you do.

Wishing you so much sophisticated sales success!
